Gerd Schaller took the classic path to becoming a conductor, starting as a rehearsal pianist and advancing to General Music Director:
1993 at the Staatsoper in Hanover, 1998 conductor of the opera orchestra in Braunschweig, from 2003 to 2006 GMD in Magdeburg. He has also worked as a guest conductor with numerous orchestras including the state orchestras of Braunschweig and Hanover, the NDR Radio Philharmonic of Hanover, the Munich Radio Orchestra and the Hofkapelle of Meiningen. On the international stage Gerd Schaller has conducted orchestras in many venues, including The Makropulos Affair, Wozzeck and Rigoletto at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, and with numerous renowned ensembles such as the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Prague, the Symphony Orchestra of the Prague National Theatre, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Bucharest and the George Enescu Philharmonic of Bucharest.
Gerd Schaller is widely acknowledged as a Bruckner expert. Together with “his” orchestra, the Philharmonie Festiva, he has recorded all of Anton Bruckner’s eleven symphonies for the world-renowned label Profil Edition Günter Hänssler in cooperation with Bavarian Radio’s Studio Franken.„What you notice about his Bruckner is the transparent sound, the clarity of the polyphony. He brings out voice lines that one did not even suspect before.“ (FonoForum).
Turning Bruckner’s Ninth Symphony into a complete work was a key musical project for Gerd Schaller:
„Bruckner’s bold sketches and score drafts reveal the magnificent finale he planned for his Ninth Symphony. This premiere is the climax of my Bruckner cycle.“ (Gerd Schaller).
After many years spent studying the original sources, he created his own version of the final movement which he has first performed and recorded. The CD was released by Profil Edition Günter Hänssler. The score and the orchestral material are available by Ries & Erler, Berlin.
„The Great Mass by Johann von Herbeck is Romantic to the core.“ (Concerti).
(Bruckner Journal London).
„Once heard, not easily forgotten; and Schaller’s well-played performance is extremely convincing.“ (Gramophone, 10/2013).
